Pen Pal Check-In

Most of you are communicating with a pen pal this semester - either a Peace Corps volunteer or an agriculture student in Malaysia.

It can feel very frustrating to communicate with someone you don't know via the internet, especially when their internet access is less than perfect.  I was just chatting with Nur about student access to email at her university in Malaysia - she said that the instructors all have landline connections while the students access wi-fi only in the library.  Likewise, some Peace Corps volunteers will live in villages without electricity, much less internet.  They may have to travel for hours to reach the nearest internet access point.

The point here is that our pen pals may not be checking their email every day.  So it's important that you have at least initiated contact, allowing for plenty of time for them to get back to you.

For this reason, we want to make sure that everyone is on track with this assignment.  In the comments below, please let us know how your communication is going.  Share any frustrations you may have, or celebrate your successes!

  8. I have communicated twice with my Pen Pal and have gotten a response from her. She says that she has a lot of assignments that she is working on and apologizes for the delay in writing. I said that that is fine and I'm just looking forward to learning more from her. Looking forward to good things from this!
